3 Column template with good Adsense placement

Posted on | February 12, 2006 | 7 Comments

Swimming LanesThe Three column style for Wordpress weblogs is getting very popular. With all the billions of interesting plugins available, and with the increasingly common use of ads on the sites, it is hard to fit everything in on a standard two-column design. Despite that, there really aren’t that many templates available which are both stylish and effective.

My Favorite

After much searching, I recommend 130106 by Isnaini. It does a nice centered “pop” of the Google Adsense, which I find very effective.

For examples, there is the host site, of course. I don’t care for the pink-brown on that site, so another (prettier) example site using that theme is my marketing site, Marketer’s Eye.

Wow, I just typed up a long post about the poor quality of Isnani’s themes and your site ate it up :(

OK, that’s the last straw, no more spamquiz plugin for now. I think it has been eating other comments as well.

If you have the time, I’d love to hear your thoughts on the themes.

Well I am a fan of Isnani’s three colum themes and I had hoped he would release one for Wordpress, so when I saw 130106 I was elated. That elation quickly vanished once I installed his theme and had to take about an hour to figure out how to remove all his adsense and chitika code, along with all his meta info in the header.Even his favicon was in there.

For some ppl that would have been easy as pie, but for someone not good with code who is unsure what they should and should not be removing, it can be frustrating.

The problem as it turned out is that Isnani appears to simply download his themes right off his server when he is finished using them and then places them on his site download.

He isn’t so much as releasing a newly made theme as much as he is releasing one that he no longer uses.He just throws it out there with no care or concern for the quality.

I know on his site he says that the coding in the themes had no id and was just for instructional purposes but that isn’t true. Those were actual working ads and some ppl even thought he was doing it for money.I am not sure either way.I just wouldn’t reccommend his theme based on how he puts it out.

Theme designer releasing themes with their adsense, yahoo and chitika coding built in was such a big issue it was discussed on the main WP site.

Again, I actually like his 3 column themes, just not the unethical and shoddy way he releases them to the public.

Ah, that makes sense then. It must be one of those developer blind-spot issues, since I edited the parts you mentioned without even thinking about it.

It is a bit sloppy of a practice, and I did think he might be trying to spread his ads, but there was no way I was going to let that happen.

The good thing is that since you commented, I went and did some rigorous validation of the sites which use that theme, and found one template error, which I fixed straightaway.

So, I guess I should rephrase my recommendation, it is a good template, if you know PHP and don’t mind editing a bit.

Your Marketer’s Eye looks great on IE/windows, but tottally detroyed on IE 5.2/Mac . Common designers’ issues. Well, perhaps you can make it look great on both. Just for the sake of great examples.

Gaus, this isn’t the theme I mention above. I’ve since changed themes.

As far as IE 5.2 Mac compatibility, well that is unfortunate. I simply don’t have the time to support a browser with such a vanishingly small footprint, and such crazy difficult idiosyncrasies. Almost any browser is better, I am afraid IE 5.2 users are simply going to have to deal with this site being broken.
